Good morning all,

Me and my wife moved to Charlotte about 6 months ago because of a job relocation. We wanted to experience the area first before deciding to buy. Since moving here, we both agreed this is where we would love to be long term. We are in our late 20s, early 30s and we are settling down so we do not necessarily need to be close to the city but would actually prefer to be in the suburbs.

We love the area of Ballantyne but we are also targeting Indian Land SC, Fort Mill SC, and Matthews but I see a lot of homes not in those areas that look like nice houses but I want to know if they are located in good neighborhoods with good to excellent school systems.

We qualify for buying a house in the 225k range but I would rather buy a modest house because we are planning on having kids in the near future.

Here are some of the houses that caught our attention. As I mentioned to you via text, some of them are on the Independence location:

MLS#: 2124931 | Carolina MLS (Charlotte) (MLS division only)

MLS#: 2140936 | Carolina MLS (Charlotte) (MLS division only)

MLS#: 2146599 | Carolina MLS (Charlotte) (MLS division only)

MLS#: 2148096 | Carolina MLS (Charlotte) (MLS division only)

MLS#: 2138919 | Carolina MLS (Charlotte) (MLS division only)

MLS#: 2136253 | Carolina MLS (Charlotte) (MLS division only)

Thank you in advance!

School Digger reports and Spot Crime websites are your friends in this search. I don't recognize any of your areas so I can't help you there.

But regarding Indian Land, if you can find some homes there in your price range, go for it. It's a lovely place to live and really growing fast. Indian Land elementary is excellent. That was my second choice before deciding on where I am now.

Those houses are pretty spread out, do you need to commute to a specific location?

But to be honest, IMO it's going to be very tough to get a newer home (which most of your links looked to be, although not sure the quality of a new home for $125K) that's in what most would consider a "good to excellent" school district. I doubt it can be found in Ballantyne/Fort Mill/Indian Land, possibly Matthews but probably not newer. Concord could possibly be an area to look into, but the schools may vary there as well.

When house hunting, it helps to decide what things you're flexible on, if you already know you will be inflexible on other things.

If price is definate then persuade yourselves to look at smaller, older homes, or maybe foreclosures. Sometimes the repairs are not that bad. Houses can sell cheap simply because they're dirty and the shrubs are overgrown, the owners are too cheap to spruce them up and sell for proper value.

I agree with having to have some flexibility in that price range. Your links aren't working, but I would suggest looking in the Carmel/Johnston neighborhoods. Some homes fall in that price range. Older neighborhoods, nice trees, good proximity to Ballantyne. Many won't have garages or the latest kitchens and the middle school isn't rated highly, but the elementary and high are considered decent.

Personally, I would be very leery of newer builds in that price range. I feel like the cost to build a home would be more than that, but that's a totally uninformed opinion.

The links didn't work for me, either. Look in Belmont or Cramerton. Mt. Holly might have something, too.

You don't say where in the city you work. Depending on that location, you might have a better commute from Clover, SC or Kings Mountain than Indian Land.
