Might want to check out the Florida-Orlando boards on here. Or google disney boards. There are tons of boards dedicated just to this.

There is/was a Days Inn called Sunspree just down the road from Downtown Disney when we lived there. i think it's the Lake Buena Vista exit. It's very similar, as far as rooms, bunk beds, characters, etc. but just not Nick characters that was much cheaper. Really nice pool. If you are doing the Disney thing, did you try doing a Disney package. A lot of the Disney hotels are less expensive than Nick. I would do the hotel/resort over the town home just for the vacation experience. That is just my preference.

If you have AAA check them out, pretty good deals. Also Expedia.com, they had a good disney ticket deal.

The Sunspree was a holiday inn resort - it's still there - not called sunspree anymore.
also, what are you plans while down there - that determines a lot.

You are right it is a Holiday Inn, but if you google Holiday Inn Sunspree Orlando, it still comes up. I pulled it up today. We are going to FL at the end of the month. I might check it out for us.

Research the Nick hotel. I've heard bad things about it. Loud with lots of partiers, none of the fun characters, old and dirty, etc. This is second hand knowledge, so maybe it's not accurate, but it's worth looking into.
