I think that is some publicity hype from a PR firm.

Why not? It's just compiled data using listed job opportunities per capita. They are 100 different ways to compile data using various metrics to assess these things. For instance is it jobs/MSA or city population? Professional versus non-professional? Contract, part-time or seasonal? I don't think it's PR hype but one angle or perspective. I don't think those others cities are hype...why just Charlotte being hype?...oh, ok, its the next Detroit.
I think the only statistic that matters are number of "employed" people. It's the one that nobody will talk about yet it is the most simple to understand. It's probably why people don't use it because it can't be masked with statistics.
Major corporations, and especially the Finance Industry are notorious for posting job openings which they never intend to fill with new hiring.
"Job Openings" are irrelevant if the employer never fills the job. It's hopeium.

I don't think that Charlotte is the next Detroit, but, I do think that jobs are very hard to come by & that job openings that are posted are either never getting filled or fake to begin with.
I know several people (first hand) that continue to apply for jobs 10-20 per day, that are never being called, never replied to, and have been either out of work or seriously under-employed for the past 4 years. Many companies are pulling out of the region & I know that everyone knows about the recent mortgage layoffs. It is not all milk & honey here.
The stat that this person is quoting is some kind of hype and does not pertain to the real world IMHO.
