We are moving to Matthews in a couple of weeks and I am trying to learn the best driving routes. Can someone tell me how to get from Independence BLVD south of 485 to the Sysky YMCA? Thanks a bunch.

Not exactly sure what direction you are coming from. Can you clarify exactly where you will be?

If you take 485 off of Independence, take 485 south and get off at exit 57. I don't recall whether it's a left or right turn off the exit, but once you get off make the turn that points to Downtown. Once you make that turn, make a right onto McKee (it's less than 1/4 mile from the exit ramp and directly across the street from what appears to be a gas station; there's also a shopping center directly across the street from McKee). Anyway, take McKee all the way down (you'll see a school on your right and a Gateway Academy on your left). When you get to the first major intersection (which is the corner of McKee and Weddington), make a left. The Siskey Y is on your right hand side, directly across the street from the Plantation Shopping Center. Hope this helps.

Coming from downtown, heading south on Independence, what is the best way to get to the Siskey YMCA without getting on I-485?

485 is a quick and direct route, but if you're looking to do side streets for the sake of touring, and if you are referencing 'downtown' in Matthews, if you head down Independence (it's actually E. Independence when you're in Charlotte), you can take a right turn on Sam Newell Road. That will take you on a straight route without making any turns. If anyone hasn't warned you yet, street names change from one block to the next. With that being said, if you continue on Sam Newell, that will turn into South Trade Street (once you cross over West/East John Street, which will then turn into Weddington Road. Once on Weddington, you'll eventually cross over 485 and then the Siskey Y is a short distance on Weddington after you've crossed over 485. Hope this helps.
