I have applied for a job transfer from NYC to Charlotte, I would like to see Charlotte while waiting for transfer. Was planing on flying from NYC to Charlotte, Rent a car and spend weekend in hotel. Then drive around looking for apartment areas.
My goal is an apartment this year to see different areas of Charlotte before purchasing a Townhouse next year. It seems like the Townhouses are more expensive than a single family home.
Is my plan doable? I am also looking for an apt less than what I am presently paying. I pay $1600 a month for a one bedroom.
Mishie, there are a ton of areas that you could look into with your budget….i guess some questions i have before recommending. Are there kids involved and are schools a priority for you? Where would your new job be located and how much of a commute would you like?

No, I will doing the move solo. I requested a Social Security Office in Charlotte, so it will be at any SSA in Charlotte area. Since I work in the city, I only drive on the weekends. So I am not used to driving, except weekends.
I would like to fly down but totally clueless on where to start, which is strange since I just planned a trip and went to Australia solo last month. Yet struggling trying to figure out where to go and look in Charlotte.
Since it's a hardship transfer I can't pick and choose location. Once they have the location I have to move ASAP. I just know Charlotte area, if that helps.
Do you think flying down and renting a car and driving around is a good area. I heard EXCELLENT things regarding Charlotte.

There is a social security office in Gastonia, on New Hope Rd. You should check to see where else in the area there are offices.
Thank you, it's only showing one office in Charlotte. I learned I can be transferred to any office near Charlotte. Thanks for info on Gastonia, it's a 28 minute drive from Charlotte. Do you know any other towns next to Charlotte other than Gastonia?

I am trying to plan a weekend trip and look at apts, I thought it was similar to NYC with numerous offices nearby. I see I will have to drive my car in NC, no taking train to work.

Concord is near Charlotte. Shelby & Statesville would be next. I suggest that you compare your list to a map. Most of those locations are nowhere near Charlotte. That appears to be a list of offices in the state.

I know there is an office in Hickory and it isn't on the list, so I am just guessing this are offices with openings, maybe? I would think that could change at any time, too.
I think you are right, SB, - Shelby and Statesville might be considered Charlotte area, and Gastonia definitely is. I just noticed Albemarle and Salisbury on the list, too.
OP: None of the openings but ONE appear to be IN Charlotte, assuming this is a complete list of openings for the region. A trip here to check out Charlotte when you may not be working close to Charlotte would not be helpful, in my opinion. Now, if you want to come and check out surrounding areas, get a feel for the region, that wouldn't be time wasted. But unless you are certain you will get a position in that one office in Charlotte, you would need to check out areas that cross into several different counties, and most which would take you an hour or more to commute if you actually lived in Charlotte.
In other words, if you have put in a transfer and may end up in Salisbury or Statesville, visiting Charlotte is not going to be helpful at all.

Shelby isn't what I would consider computable either, Ani, unless you commute from Gastonia or Kings Mountain. I think you're right, Ani. It's probably a list of offices with openings.
