Hoping some CMS or other early childhood education teachers can chime in here.

My wife has her BS degree already and is thinking about going back to school so that she can teach at the pre-k or kindergarten levels.

1. What sort of degree or license is needed to teach at the pre-k or kindergarden level? To me a master's degree seems overkill but that is what some of the local school's are suggesting for her.

2. What is the job market like in this area? I would think since CMS only offers a few pre-K and K programs that your job options would be a lot more limited as there are not as many classrooms for this grade level.

3. Salary data seems to be all over the place. The YMCA has licensed pre-k teaching jobs posted at around $10 per hour while CMS kindergarten positions appear to pay between $35-45k with benefits. Why would a licensed early childhood education teacher work at places like the YMCA or a church that pay next to nothing?

Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thank you!

I have a bachelors in Early Childhood Ed. and the most I ever made was $10 an hour, back in 1995. I quickly changed career paths after wasting four years of time and money on a degree I will never use. She would be better off working in a math or science in junior high or high school for the most job opportunities.

The School districts will pay the best however there is a lot of competition for few spots. Private schools will pay slave wage, but if it's just to have something to do, that might work for her.
