I took a stroll around Yorkshire and thought that the Walker Branch Greenway was...somewhat incomplete. The whole thing took about 5 mins to walk. The end leads you to the Rivergate Shopping Center and thats it. It seems half thought out or an overrun of budget that caused the rest of the greenway to never materialize. Does anybody know if an extension is planned? Any connections to anything? Or, any explanation of why the greenway is situated in nowhere in particular. Thanks

They're all built right along creeks, and they all get built in bits and pieces. They stopped spending some of the bond money when the crash hit in 08, too. The plan, according to the county's site, is for Walker Branch to connect with other trails south of the SC border. By 2018, they're hoping to have a .8-mile extension built to connect the neighborhoods on the other side of Tryon St.

The Walker Branch Greenway was built by the developers of RiverGate. So it only goes along the back of stores at the edge of the shopping center. The park bonds approved by voters in 2008 included money for extending the greenway trail south to Smith Road, but that's still a couple of years off. There's a DIRTway there now that's not paved but walkable when it's not too wet. See Steele Creek Residents Association

There's also a short paved trail on the other side of RiverGate, also built by the center's developers. See Steele Creek Residents Association

Mecklenburg County hasn't built any greenway trails in Steele Creek.

Thanks for the information. I just wish they could make this area more walkable.
