Bluelily- i think the same way. However, do you think before someone breaks in your house that they haven't considered the fact that they may get shot? And...I don't know about you but I am not real strong. I could easily be overpowered by most men. They may not have a gun but they could definately still hurt or kill me (or worse my kids)!

QC misfit said it perfectly! I would rather shoot them and be wrong if it means my kids are safe.

A joke for those who are not easily offended, if you are easily offended STOP READING HERE:

You may not like guns, and choose not to own one. That is your right.
You might not believe in God. That is your choice.
However, if someone is breaking into your home the first two things you are going to do are:
1) Call someone with a gun
2) Pray they get there in time

I think women approach the thinking about a break-in with a totally different mindset than we guys do! I'd assume automatically that anyone breaking into my house has a gun and react to them that way. I don't currently own a gun, but have given serious thought to getting one. But there are endless devices around the home that can be used as defensive weapons. If someone broke into my house, my feeling is, if they end up dead, it's their own fault! My feelings of guilt about it, would rise to the level of stepping on a bug and being glad it's dead. Too Bad - so Sad!

That was in no way offensive! I agree!

Well, this is why my son and I "practice" different scenarios. We also used to practice escape routes for fire. We would say - ok - fire starts here - where do we go out? I think practicing a possible scenario makes me more confident. I am very very cool in an emergency, and indeed, my whole family (parents included) depend on me to be the cool-headed one when tragedy strikes. I had proven I can get most anything w/o falling apart (til it is over, Hee Hee - then I go to pieces!!!!!) But I think the reason I am able to stay calm, focused and steely is b/c I practice imaginary scenarios and how I would react, what the options are . . . so I don't get caught off guard.

Maybe that technique would help others . . . ?????a

Oh - and want to mention -sometimes I think the sound of a round being dispensed into the chamber (the click click of a 9 mm automatic) . . . that is, in itself, enuff to convince some intruders to leave the premises. However, my daddy taught us - you wanna stop someone . . . use a shotgun.

I honestly think - if it came down to my children or shooting a gun . . . there would be no hesitation. . . just Ba-Boom.

Respectfully, I'd rather have a hit with a .22 than a miss with a .45.....

Just my 2c after 17 years military and police background

Personally, I am for strict gun laws.If it was me and my husband already had a gun, I would learn to use it.

The data I have read in independent studies claims 1/2 of prisoners had guns and used them to threaten victims. Given that free American society lives in fear of being assaulted, maimed and killed, it makes sense to own a gun they have been trained and practised at the range.

Like another poster here says, make a plan for different scenarios of danger you might encounter in your home. Even with a gun, doesn't mean you won't miss, or the criminal fights you for it then shoots you.

I am a 65 year old woman - I got my pistol license this year - I bought a Ruger 22 pistol for protection.
I go to the range to practice.
I took a "Woman on Target" course (offered free by the NRA) to learn gun safety.

Don't be a Victim!

I'll definitely echo the "Don't be a Victim!" message.

Despite what some crazies will tell you, men and women are very different. A woman has essentially no chance to fight back in hand to hand combat against a man. "Kick him in the nuts" well, you know who is fully aware of that weak spot? Every single guy in the history of the world (except eunuchs maybe).

Get a gun, learn how to use it, and house it loaded, but locked away responsibly from children.

Practice regularly. If you're so bold I would even recommend exercising strenuously before going shooting to simulate the stress of a home intruder.

Stay safe...

by not being a victim.

This is an ancient thread but, given all the things that have happened in the last year it seems pretty relevant.

I agree with what pretty much everyone has said. You can have all kinds of high ideals on how the world should work and how people should treat each other and that's great... until you meet someone who doesn't share or care about those beliefs. No one says people are crazy for having a fire extinguisher or smoke alarm in your house even though there is a very small chance you will need it. Firearm ownership should be viewed the same way with the added responsibility of you have to be responsible and competent with it.
