Hello! My family and I are considering a move to Charlotte from O'Fallon, MO. O'Fallon is about 35 miles west of St. Louis. We live in an area that's continuing to be developed, with lots of stores (WalMart, Target, Lowes, etc) and places to eat. The schools used to be highly rated, but have dipped due to enormous growth in the district, with new housing developments popping up frequently. Average housing costs are around $250,000 for a nice 4 BR, 2.5BA home, but lots are pretty small in that price range.

I will be working uptown for Wells Fargo.

Basically, I am looking for something similar to where we live now, with access to big box stores and places to eat. Good schools are a must, as we have 3 kids ranging from 1 to 13. I currently commute an hour into the city each day, so it would be cool if I had less of a commute. My husband hasn't looked for employment yet, so we'll address him at a later date!

I've heard that Fort Mill meets most of my desires... but I was wondering if anyone had any other viable suggestions we should check out?

Again, I'm specifically looking for:

1) Good Schools
2) Reasonable housing ($300's for a decent sized house and lot)
3) Not too difficult commute to uptown Charlotte
4) Close proximity to commerce

Thank you all so much!

Small world. I have family that lives in O'Fallon, my Mom lives in St. Peters and I live in Fort Mill. I can help you with any questions regarding Fort Mill. Your commute would be 30-45 minutes to uptown from FM. Also, decent sized lots are hard to find here, but we are close to several malls and big box stores.

union county (weddington, marvin, porter ridge) might fit the bill. small variety of places to eat, but plenty of grocery stores, a walmart, and still growing. i can usually get uptown in 20 minutes without traffic (so probably 45min at peak rush hour)

If you work uptown you may want to line in south Charlotte. It would cut your drive time depending how far out. It would be 30 min or less where you are located.

You could also look north of Charlotte in Western Cabarrus County. The Cox Mill or Odell school districts. You will have about a 30- 45 minute commute in the morning. Concord Mills mall, Walmart, Target, Amazon Fulfillment center all close by.

Fort Mill is a very nice area. Or, Mint Hill, Harrisburg..

I live in St Louis now and am moving back to Charlotte next summer. I've only been here a year and I can't wait to leave.. I miss NC so much.

I'll add my 2 cents, as I am looking for the same thing. Huntersville stay south of exit 23 and schools better west of 77. Ft Mill, Indian Land area.

those are the two biggies when you factor in 250k budget, 4 bedrooms, great schools and 30 minute commute to uptown, It doesn't seem it's easy to recommend anywhere else unless you are willing to sacrifice one of those 4 things.....

One more tip, if you get to the point where you are google street imaging some locations to get a better idea what the area looks like, check the date in the bottom of the image, many are 6 or 7 years old and may not accurately represent the area...I've found this happens in many of these newer areas.
