Hello, I am doing research for a friend, he has a new job in North Carolina starting in June. He is trying to figure out the best place to live. He would like to be within 30 minutes of either the Charlotte airport so getting back home for visits will be easy. (he is from PA). He will also need to travel to TN as well.
He is late 40's, enjoys live music so would like to be near a town where he could go out to see a band from time to time. Loves good restaurants as well. Not sure that he is a city boy but maybe a nice suburb that has a well known area like this for eating, music and shopping would be right up his alley. I think he is looking for a hip modern type of town where he can be out and about if he chooses but also have the peacefulness of the burbs as well. He also loves swimming and the sun, so whatever area he chooses he would be looking for a nice modern condo or apt. with a pool and a gym. I have been reading many articles on the top places to live in NC but would love some of your first hand opinions. It seems like Durham has some great options but not sure where to tell him to look near Charlotte, help!
If you were 40-50 and wanted to be in a great spot near Charlotte where would you choose?

Thanks!
I moved down from the South Jersey suburbs of Philadelphia. I gave you two responses in the 1st thread that you made. You need to tell people that he's moving from Philadelphia or near it, whichever the case may be.
Suburbs here are no hipper than around Philadelphia. Given that, the suburbs west of Charlotte give him the most proximity to the airport, give him all of the basics that he wants, & give him a jumpstart to go to Asheville. He can go to Charlotte for whatever nightlife he finds lacking out here.

Mooresville is north of Charlotte. Traffic is worst on the north/south axis. It's very popular with families for schools. That's up to him.
The towns west of Charlotte are closer to the airport. Gastonia has some bars etc for nightlife & there are decent restaurants in the area. The place that fits your description best is Asheville. Asheville has a small regional airport. It's in the mountains with harsher weather than Philadelphia. He can go there & enjoy himself but rents are high & he probably won't like the airport.
Read the threads about the toll lanes on I 77 which concerns locating in Mooresville. His best suburban bets for 30 minutes from the Charlotte airport are in the I 85/US 74 corridor west of Charlotte.
I would suggest Huntersville area, specifically near Birkdale Village. Depending on commute times, he could easily get to Charlotte for more extensive nightlife and to the infrequent airport trips. Some great bars/taverns but not too rowdy.

Are there age-appropriate bars for single 40 year olds? I've seen them mentioned for people in their early 20s. That's one reason why I didn't mention Huntersville.
The main branch of the Gaston County library in Gastonia has movies, concerts, visiting authors, etc. aimed at various age groups. There's a little something for everyone. Is there something like that in Huntersville?
