I wouldn't say the area is eroding.

Some people like adventure (shootings, murder, robbery at gun point) with their shopping. Northlake has you covered!

I'm sure it could happen anywhere.........although it really seems centered at that mall lately.

Has there been any change of procedure, staffing or preparedness by the mall or CMPD in that immediate area? I'm sure the standard, "we're stepping up patrols" is what has been reported but either that isn't working or it's not really happening.

My opinion : The area is not eroding, it is in too much of a prime area (in between Charlotte and Huntersville) close to I-77 and 485, and off Harris Blvd to go the way of Eastland Mall. It really is the closest thing for those living in Lake Norman to get a mall.

But I agree that crime is an issue here. The mall is only 10 years old (September 2005 it opened?) and it looks nice. But looks are deceiving. If I ever have to go there I make sure I visit on a weekday, during the day, beats the traffic and most crowds.

There was also a shooting across from the mall at Target earlier this year. And a year before that there was a gun battle on Harris Blvd where innocent peoples cars were sprayed with bullets. Now I have never had to dodge bullets myself trying to get into the food court but to deny the presence of gangs or theft in this area is denying reality.

Of course crime is everywhere, even South Park to a much lesser extent. But there are areas that have higher amount of crimes than others and Northlake is one of them. I will continue to go to Northlake if I need to, just be aware of your surroundings.

Your right, most used police cliche ever "we're stepping up patrols" - usually amounts to maybe a patrol car circling the parking lot an extra time once a day.

As mentioned in the other thread, not only was the Christmas Eve death not a murder, it was the result of a cop killing the armed suspect. I think that does show that they have in fact "stepped up patrols."

How would you recommend a crime like this be prevented? Seems impossible.

Increasing patrolling sounds like a good idea. What's the alternative?

Yes, additional police presence can help deter crime, not prevent, but deter. Make someone think that if they commit a crime that there is a police officer near who has the authority to enforce the law. However, it does not prevent an actual crime, probably delay it or transfer it somewhere else. For example: if someone sees a pair of shoes they want to steal at FOOTLOCKER, and there is security standing by that store, they will probably not steal the shoes at that time. But they will steal. The crime is simply delayed until the security moves away or the perp will simply walk over to Rack Room. Same with any crime. If someone wants to fight, they will fight, and usually don't take into consideration a nearby security guard.

Strictly speaking for Northlake mall, I have been there several times over the past 10 years. I have never personally had any issues. But there is a criminal element that is attracted to that area. And it is not just theft, but some violent crime. A combination of factors, CATS bus line, ease of access to the area, etc....I don't discourage people from going, I am just saying I am more careful when I am there.

To clarify, he was an off-duty officer who happened to be at the mall at the right time with his weapon. To me that is not at all stepping up patrols, it's getting lucky.
