Coming from a someone who lived in NYC for 30+ years. South End, Uptown, NoDa, Plaza-Midwood, Elizabeth is REALLY SMALL. But I still LOVE Charlotte for what if offers.
Ashville is really nice and more 'walkable.' I've heard about Davidson, but haven't had chance to make it up there yet.
Charleston, SC is also pretty nice and 'walkable' as well and I believe SC is more 'retirement friendly' due to taxes.
You may want to look at Birkdale Village in Huntersville. It is only approximately 15 years old, but it offers everything that you are wanting and all is within walking distance. Many in Charlotte seem to forget about this neighborhood because it is not historic, in suburbs, and does not have as big of a bar and restaurant district as downtown or other areas already mentioned. But I think it meets your criteria.
