CIAA close to deciding whether to move basketball tournaments out of Charlotte

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) will decide this week whether its popular men’s and women’s basketball tournaments will be moved to another city or whether they will remain in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they have been held for the past six years.
A news conference announcing the decision – prompted by North Carolina’s controversial House Bill 2 (HB2) public accommodations measure – will be held before the end of the week in Charlotte, according to Bri Funte, assistant director of communications for the CIAA.
The decision will come after the CIAA commissioner Jacqie McWilliams and the CIAA board of chancellors and presidents from the 12 schools held meetings on Thursday.
Of chief concern, at least two of the schools’ leaders said publicly, was the amount of money the schools stand to lose – with estimates as high as $1 million at one school – if the tournament is moved. In total, conference schools combined could lose $6 million and possibly more, considering possible deposits lost on venues for scholarship fundraisers for some schools.

I think they will be quite happy to see the mess removed from the city. They make less money when it's in town.

As someone who worked in the Westin during the CIAA I can assure you they enjoy the income.

So HBC's feel very strongly about letting men use women's bathrooms? Interesting. Didn't know the trans thing was yuugge at HBC; thought it was just a gentry white limousine liberal rallying call like free Tibet or free range chickens.

So the CIAA surcharge tax wasn't the breaking point after all.

Hotels and restaurants were already furious over the nonsensical rioting, looting and destruction eliminating a source of revenue and causing massive expense to reconstruct damages.
Pile that on top of HB2 scaring off another portion of business.

Ridiculous waste of time, money, energy and enthusiasm.

I am dismayed at the small minority of people in this city who would rather have it fail than try to correct perceived ills by hard work and community spirit.

The CIAA games bring in the most money for the city. The games far exceed The PGA golf tournament as well as NASCAR and others. Regardless of how you may feel about a few incidents that take place because of a few knuckleheads it would be a major loss for the city.

Well said! I too think the positives outweigh the negatives of the tournament.

Well ... Thank Roberts, for starting all the bathroom hand-wringing to begin with. She seriously couldn't foretell that the NC Leg would get involved? Sheesh. Her high horse ordinance has cost businesses much, and the ultimate irony being that it impacted uptown especially.

Nobody knew before (or now) when transgender people were selecting the stall they wanted and dressing within the role. There wasn't really a problem per se that needed "fixing".
