I heard a report this morning re: educating the public about use of 311 rather than 911.

Anyway want to comment? Do you know when to use 311? Have you ever used 311? Have you told your kids about 311 and when to use it?

I used 311 anytime I needed any information about the city - like if I needed to schedule a bulk garbage pickup.

I've also used it to pay my water bill.

You can pay your water bill via phone? I had no idea. I guess I don't read my bills closely enuff, LOL!!! Thanks for the info!

I like this one:

Burning building? Call 9-1-1.
Burning Question? Call 3-1-1.

You know we never like to call 911 unless it's like a life and death emergency, however, when we did dial 311 when there was a drug deal going on right in front of our house at 11pm there was some sort of miscommunication between 311 and the officer. So instead of the officer coming at a reasonable amount of time to catch the shady individuals that were outside our house for 20+ minutes, the officer showed up over an hour later b/c his call said that he was responding to a stolen vehicle not a drug deal. So in short the next time we need an officer, we are going to dial 911.

On the plus side, we did use 311 when there was a billing error on our water bill and the problem was resolved, so in short I wouldn't dial 311 if you need a service, I would dial it only if you need a problem fixed.

We have called 311 to report a malfunctioning redlight and to schedule pickup of an old piece of furniture. Oh, and also to report a small water main leak on the street.

I used 311 for the first time this past weekend. I found a lost dog on a deserted country road but could tell it was a domestic "inside" dog by its behavior. I called 311 to contact animal control to come pick it up.

Yep, I guess that sums it up. I am still trying to learn when to call 311.
