I am glad, for the Indian shopkeeper's sake, that he is now aware that the crime was committed by one individual - as opposed to him feeling that the action reflects the sentiment in the (overall) community.

Happens often. The "hate" label in crime should be dropped. A crime is a crime and there should be no difference in punishment. In any case the perpetrator should be punished harshly without regard to race or anything else. There is no better or worse level of crime. It is all bad. The suffering endured by the victim is the same whether it is race related or not.
