I do hope that the new Charlotte airport expansion will add to international flights and the new American airline will look on adding more European routes. If not other international airlines hopefully will consider Charlotte.
I only know of Lufthansa's direct flights to Munich and Frankfurt from Charlotte at present.
Are there any other direct flights to Europe from Charlotte?
Maybe seasonal flights?
US Air also has direct flights to London Gatwick, Madrid, Paris, and Rome. I think the Madrid flight might be seasonal. I took it last year. it's on a B767, the rest are on A330's.
Also coming March US have a direct flight to London Heathrow as well as the one to London Gatwick.
I don't understand why there is such a huge push by the locals to get a direct flight to Heathrow in lieu of Gatwick. I find that Gatwick is a much easier airport to deal with as an international passenger. If you take the Gatwick Express, you can be in Central London in less than 30 minutes.
Heathrow is hugely congested, subject to interruptions whenever anyone of importance in the British government or Royal family decides they want to go somewhere, and it's not IMO easier to get to. While the Tube goes there, it can take an hour or more to make it to central London since amazingly, the Tube does not have the ability to run express trains like they do in say NYC.

I would rather fly into Gatwick any time, I just like the option of a 2nd flight to London.

Connections... LHR is served by nearly every airline on the planet...more options = more passengers (I think this is the logic)?!?
If I was flying to a non-UK destination, I don't think I would care much for using London as a gateway city. It seems to me it would be much easier to fly to one of the gateway cities in the USA to jump off to any point on the globe.
