I am relocating to the area on Jan 2 (temp housing until I sell my house in Buffalo area). Once I sell my house, I will be bringing along my wife and 3 kids: ages 14,11,8. My biggest concerns are schools, but in terms of location I am looking for:
- Within 25 minute commute to Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre
- SCHOOLS!!! This is probably the biggest concern...
Most are telling me to search in Cabarrus County. I'm looking for a great community location for my kids...house in the 200K range.
Any thoughts or opinions would be most appreciated!
I can tell you this much. I moved from Rochester to Raleigh (so take your same situation and move it about an hour and a half east in both states) 12 years ago, and wish I had stayed in Rochester. NC county-based school systems will leave you dissapointed when you compair them to the suburban school districts in WNY. Just my 2 cents.

Send CharlotteAgent a pm, he could be a big help to you in finding the info you are looking for and the kind of house you want since that is his "territory" so to speak Off the top of my head I would suggest this, look into the Cabarrus side of the big Highland Creek development - very nice, tons of kids, I think you would like it

If I may ask, I can see alot of people moving to Union County especially from NY and NJ, Anyone know if alot of them are also going to Carbarrus County?? Ive done research there too not sure what the difference is and well according to the schools Concord is really good depending on the district...
Any input on that???

It would be hard for me to know in exact percentages, but my gut feeling is that the NY/NJ natives actually tend to buy more in the north end than the south, they all seem to love the lake Although, we do have a large influx in south Charlotte and Union county for sure. The biggest difference I see is that in some places in Huntersville, Mooresville, Concord your money will buy you more house than anywhere in south Charlotte. These are all desirable areas to live in for schools and quality of life - just depends on your housing budget

Yes from my research I happen to agree, your certainly getting alot more house for your money..however from what I can tell the schools in Union weddington and marvin in particular wow their scores blow ours away in my part of Jersey and I must say our schools are very good...So I guess I will have to do a little more research in the Carbarrus area...I see harrisburg schools are good....Thanks for the info..Now next question when you mean north end what areas are u speaking of?????

Basically all the communites north and northeast of Charlotte like Huntersville, Lake Norman, Mooresville, Davidson, Concord and Harrisburg.

Ditto (except we live in the lake norman area of Charlotte) Personally I would stay out of CMS (schools in Meclkenburg county) You cant' really compare to Rochester schools because they are all top notch..here..well..no!
Check this website out - www.ncreportcards.org - I am a Realtor at Lake Norman (north of Charlotte/west of Concord/Harrisburg). I found this site most useful for reading about and obtaining individual reports for each school in North Carolina.
I agree with melkat - Mecklenburg schools tend to have lower ratings as opposed to Iredell County and Lincoln County.
