I've been living in Charlotte for about 3 years now and have taken some time off from golf, but I'm thinking of starting up again. Are there any public courses that offer affordable memberships? I can't afford any of the crazy country club initiation fees, dining minimums, etc. I'm just looking for a decent course with a friendly atmosphere. Thanks in advance!
The definition of a public course means there is no membership fee, just a per round fee. Anyone who pays the fee is welcome to play. Private courses charge membership fees, and are only open to members.
You might want to try some of the public courses operated by Mecklenburg County Park and Rec:
I appreciate the input. However, I was referring to public courses that have memberships that allow you to play anytime for free (walking only) once your membership dues are paid. Up in PA i was a member at a public course. You got preferred tee times, tournament entries, no greens fees, weekly leagues, free range balls, discount at the pro shop, etc. Wondering if anyone knows of something like that.

There are country clubs that allow the public to play, for a fee. I've never heard of memberships at public courses. What part of Pennsylvania was that?
What part of town? I believe there are a few options with what you’re talking about. I don’t play much but have played most of these and thought they were decent and seem to have basically what you’re looking for as far as I can tell:
Birkdale (Huntersville) - Birkdale Golf Club - Membership Overview (Birkdale and Divide are managed by the same company and it looks like their memberships include some privileges at all their courses which also include Highland Creek, Tradition and Waterford).
I'm near South End. Those memberships are very similar to what I was referring too. Thanks so much! Also, the course I was a member at was near Bloomsburg, PA, in NEPA.
