Though we "regulars" repeat this advice all the time, people still insist on believing finding a job will not be a problem, "for me". I just want people to know it's harder than you think for A LOT of people.
I was looking for some fun part time work and thought it would be super easy to find but there is nothinf out there...the job market is definitely tougher here then the Philadelphia market. I expected it to be slower though b/c the area is smaller but not this slow.
I would have thought that people relocating to a new area with no job prospects to be a relatively rare thing. I just had no idea...'hot' market or not I wouldn't do it. But then, I am more risk adverse than some and a bit more 'plan' oriented.

I just spoke with my friend the other day who is a recruiter and she informed me that many job reqs that she has been working on have been cancelled and that in the Atlanta area there are lots of folks looking for jobs and are starting to look across the country for opportunites. It is definitely great advice to not move to any city anywhere without securing a job, and that is not even safe as well because one does not know if the job will even last six months. It would be wise to come to a new city with at least a year's salary to be on the safe side just in case things do not work out.

Hello! I did not click on the link, but I wanted to say hello to you. I miss talking to you, and you were so very helpful to me.
A lot has happened in my life since I visited Charlotte... a lot of bad, which turned out to be good, in the long run.
I DID move. I just did not move to Charlotte or Union Co. I moved still within my town, into a rural small town, with my children.
We have a nice two story country house with ten foot ceilings. I have a front porch swing. My street hosts a parade in May. On Saturdays, you can hear the crack of the bat.
I love it. My life turned in a direction I never imagined, one that it had to, the Lords will.
I would like to thank you, Loves, for all that you did for me. You are such a wonderful person, and you are to be commended for that.
The good works you do in this life will show you favor in the next....

Thanks so much for coming back to give an update on your situation. Though it didn't work out for you to come to Charlotte I feel sure you are where you are supposed to be. Best of luck with everything in your "new" life - I'm pulling for you!
I really enjoyed reading that article. Do people really make a move to another state before they have secured employment though? Holy Cow! Talk about flying by the seat of your pants! I don't even change jobs before I have another lined up!! LOL

Thanks for sharing this info f/ your friend. Recruiters are on the cutting edge w/ the job market and how things may be shifting (or slowing down).
I think many who have considered moving here w/o a job were under the impression that certain sectors (such as IT and finance) were wide open fields w/ many openings for experienced workers. I, myself, assumed that w/ banking being such a huge industry here, jobs associated w/ finance would be plentiful and stable. I have been very surprised to see the cyclical lay-offs in finance, as I just was not aware how common lay-offs are w/ BofA and Wachovia. Plus, friends inform me that finance sector often employs workers on contract rather than as full-time employees. I would never have perceived this w/o being given that info from people actually working in finance/IT. So maybe others have ideas about the job market - like I did - that were not really on target.
That is why forums such as this one are so important - to help people understand the market b/f they make a move here without a job.
Of course, a lot depends on what sector you are in . . . healthcare and teaching are still open here and provide stable employment opportunities.
