i was getting ready to recommend VRBO.com, so i guess i'll second the recommendation. i've used it 4 or 5 times to get great houses around the charleston area.

and for a larger group with diverse interests, i would recommend any of the beaches around charleston (isle of palms, sulivan's island, folly beach, kiawah). there's plenty to do in and around charleston between golf, historic sites/museums, shopping, the beach, minor league baseball (riverdog games are a blast), and great restaurants. plus it's an easy 3 hour drive from charlotte. there are plenty of charleston threads around here that i'm sure have great advice if you do a little searching. good luck!

Hilton Head. You have tons of shoping & restaurants & golfing. Plus the beautiful historic city of Savannah is only 45 minutes away...2 destinations in 1. Something to do for everyone.

Interstate all the way and only 3 1/2 hrs from Charlotte (77 South to 26 East to 95 South).

DITTO. Hilton Head is one of the easiest drives from CLT. And Savannah is a nice day trip . . . also - historic Beaufort is a great little day trip.

We LOVE to go to Miami Beach a few times a year. It is not close by for a quick weekend trip though. But for local beaches...you can't beat

Hilton Head Island, SC
Kiawah / Isle of Palms, SC
Wrightsville Beach, NC
Myrtle Beach, SC

If it were not so far...one of the most beautiful beaches is DUCK, NC and COROLLA, NC...these are in the far northeastern corner just South of Virginia Beach...and you can see wild horses wandering the beach...very secluded though.

Default Yes

I really like Duck but that is a bit of a drive. I heard great things about Emerald Isle, NC.

I wholeheartedly agree with the previous recommendations and do agree re that, for long haul destinations, Duck and Corolla are awesome. The Outer Banks are something everyone must see at least once in a lifetime, right??? I definitely prefer out-of-season there. We had the most amazing wild horse encounter last time.

It is an especially long haul to the northern Banks, but worth it if you have the time, as the trip over provides such a GREAT taste of North Carolina, esp. the portion via NC's longest highway - U.S. 64. NC writer Jerry Bledsoe compiled many of his newspaper articles into a book on the route, and, if you are a road geek like me, it makes for a very cool read when traveling 64 in any direction.

MJ - my friends whom I like to meet up with in Corolla are from Richmond, VA. They LOVE Emerald Isle.

Sunset Beach in North Myrtle (just north of the South Carolina Border) is nice. Hilton Head is beautiful. However, if you're looking for a slice of heaven, KIAWAH is the place. There is nothing like it!

My family and I love Sullivan's Island. Next to Isle of Palms and closer to Charleston. A little more laid back with no large resorts; just house rentals.
