My teacher assistant friend will be looking for a position within CMS over the summer. She is concerned that school jobs will be cut next year as state budgets inevitably decline.

That's a real possibility.

Smaller financial services firms, it will depend. Nobody really knows exactly what the world will look like in the next couple months. 5 months ago did any of us imagine a complete shut down? Not really. This could all repeat itself again in the fall, it could be fully resolved over summer, the economy could take 3 years to recover, or it could bounce back by next year. It is all guessing. The one thing that is pretty certain is the booming economy from a couple months ago is gone right now.
Valid point. My partner works for one of the major financial institutions here. He had two open positions they were actively interviewing for and his leadership recently said “pause for now, please”. Last week they extended an early retirement “early leave” offer along with a lot of other tenured people in the company. I hope he takes it. He deserves to hang the hat up.

Your housing budget will also impact any specific location as well.
Also, related to Gastonia would be Kings Mountain, which is in Gaston & Cleveland counties. Real estate values are going to go up when construction begins on the casino.

If your boyfriend is in finance he'll have no trouble job wise as people have said. Charlotte is the second largest banking center in the whole US behind NYC! With your price range I would say look at East Charlotte (Mint Hill, Matthews areas) for a decent house! Reasonably nice and central for that price range! I'm was used to looking at 1 million+ for a starter home when I moved from Sydney so Charlotte was dirt cheap!

Thank you everyone for your help! I was just offered a full time position in Belmont, so we are looking around that area! So far I’ve only searched Belmont and Mt holly areas. I don’t mind a longer-ish commute (40-45 min would probably be my max) .. any other suggestions?!

For Belmont, look as far west as Kings Mountain. Ask here about Gastonia. Look at Dallas. You might also look at Huntersville. If your boyfriend gets a job in Uptown, you absolutely don't want to be further west than Kings Mountain. Dallas might be the northern limit, west of Charlotte.

If you’re working in Belmont and he will likely be working in uptown, with a budget up to $300,000 I would look in Belmont, McAdenville, Cramerton, Mount Holly, Mountain Island, or Steele Creek. I wouldn’t want to be any further west than those areas if I was driving into the city for work, all of those areas will be anywhere from 20-50 minutes into Charlotte. But I think the Belmont and McAdenville areas would be my first pick of those options. Great little town just outside the city.

I've driven into Charlotte for doctor appointments during rush hour. It has been consistently 1 hour from door to door on the CMC Main complex, from Kings Mountain. A lot depends on access to 74 or 85 from the home. From Dallas, easy access to 321 would also be helpful.
