We have a good friend relocating to the Charlotte area to take a position at Davidson College. They mentioned living in the Lake Norman area, but were concerned with the ongoing concerns with the elevated levels in Thyroid and Ocular Melanoma. We aren't too familiar with the entire situation as we live in Union County. Are there any areas hear the college (30m commute) that are considered "safe"?

There are a couple of “maps” in these articles that may show a general idea of the heightened areas of interest...so I’d say anything to the southeast of Davidson and western Huntersville would put them in a good position...so the Sam Furr area and southeast if they’re wanting to avoid the area as a whole. If they wanted to be by water they may want to check out some of the areas towards Denver...but I personally like the Huntersville area and with its direct proximity to Davidson, seems to be the easiest answer.
There are also some nice neighborhoods off Eastfield road southeast of Huntersville, like Olmsted. Wouldn’t be a horrible commute.
We avoided the whole area before we moved here even though it was top of our list . Silly is didn’t realize the whole lake system is polluted all the way down to SC. On top of being grossly polluted with trash. Two weeks ago we saw needles floating on trash in Lake Wylie. Avoid it all
We have lived around Lake Norman since its inception. We also have many family and friends that live right on the shoreline or within walking distance of the Lake. None of us have EVER seen an example of gross pollution let alone the needles floating in the lake.
There are certain posters on this board that would be better posting the ONE SINGLE SOLITARY place in the world they like and relegating the others to their ever growing list of locales they find full of, trash, crime, bug infestations, cancer, catastrophic weather, surly neighbors and political cesspools.
So nice to know most people on this board are openminded fellow forumites that see the good as well as the bad and have an inclination to balance the few Negative Nellies on this board.
In fairness, there are NCSU advisories about eating the fish (Bass in particular) from Lake Norman. Bass have a higher chance of retaining PCBs and Mercury than other fish, so the advisory warns you should limit your consumption to 6 ounces per week of Bass caught in Lake Norman.
Antidotally, I know people who have lived on the Lake all their lives and still eat everything they catch. These folks are into their 80s now, with no known effects.
I was planning to buy a house in Mooresville with lennar and it is ending in 28115 zip code. Really wondering if go for it or not
Go for it. The eye cancer thing isn't really a thing to worry about. If you are worried, call the health department or ask a local eye doctor. It is in an area in Huntersville that was a problem. The lake is a reservoir and like other large lakes or reservoirs, it gets runoff. It is safe to swim and use recreation. It is no worse that any other. Some people eat fish from the lake. I don't eat lake fish, but I guess it isn't killing them. The person that just wrote the warning hates it here (she claims) and for years has gotten on this message board just to moan, cry and be negative. . Hopefully, she will meet someone someday. Anyway, Mooresville is a good area for schools, amenities and housing areas. Granted, traffic is a pain sometimes. Good luck. Again, the lake is very popular as you will witness. I never hear anyone complain about it being a sewer.
