For $500 you'll need to go even further out: Clover, Albemarle, Salisbury, Shelby, etc. Even people looking for roommates in Charlotte are around $700 on the low end.

One possibility is to look at those apartments near UNCC where 4 people live in the apartment but each have their own lease. I'm not sure if there's a requirement to be a student but I remember those used to be pretty cheap.
