I'm thinking of going up to Highlands-Cashiers Chamber Music Festival on Monday. Is anyone familiar with the area? How is the drive from Charlotte to Highlands? Has anyone ever been to the festival? Recommend any hotels?

Well, depends what you are looking for. I have stayed many times over the years at the High Hampton Inn, wh/ is rustic, quaint and charming . . . no phones, TVs - lots of walking trails and a golf course w/ beautiful vistas.

For another really nice resort, you might consider the Old Edwards Inn and Spa, where there is also a Lodge . . .

Close in - check out the Chandler Inn, w/ nice accommodations but I have no idea if they would be fully booked this time of year. Altho I have not stayed at the Long House B&B, I have friends who like it there - reasonably priced rooms and charming log house . . .

Otherwise, I would check w/ hotels.com or expedia and see what hotel chains might be available. Things often are booked ahead, especially when there are events such as the music festival.

The Highlands-Cashiers area is one of my favorite spots in the Southeast . . . and there are so many things to check out . . . plus a photographer's paradise.

The drive, to me, is very comfortable, but I love to drive . . . and stop along the way when I see anything interesting. Driving time would be 3 1/2 to 4 hours or so - depending where you start in Charlotte, and traffic along the way, since I-85 can be such a pain. You might want to start out early if you are like we are and enjoy finding things along the way to explore.

You will not be disappointed w/ the whole Highlands-Cashiers area. Just don't leave w/o having accommodations confirmed.

When we drive to Highlands-Cashiers in daylight, we take the "scenic route". We take 74 and go through Spindale and Rutherfordton, then take 64 through Lake Lure, and continue on 64 all the way to Highlands. The mileage is about the same but it takes longer. There are plenty of opportunities to get out, stretch, and enjoy the gorgeous scenery.

This drive takes you through apple territory, it could be a pleasant autumn jaunt!

Have fun!
