Mrdkb: Sounds like you work for BOA. Anyway, I guess one's perspective would depend on how that particular person is affected.
My case- our family is still suffering from dear hubby being let go from BOA after the Fleet Merger in 2004. Since then, we have barely been able to make ends meet- and all this instability has not helped at all. So, I'm not a big fan of jobs being cut locally... jmho...
I don't wok for BOA. I live in Atlanta & sometimes travel to Charlotte to work.
Who makes the determination that our (Charlotte) 6% is more vital than any other part of the company? You? How do you determine that w/100% confidence??
What do you mean by keeping it in perspective? Do you have inside information that your not telling us, or is this just a hope springs eternal thing??
No inside info that I am aware of. I am just being rational.

No one is 100% on this, but I would say Charlotte has more high level jobs than others areas. Obviously of that 300,000 are huge amounts of retail employees, so I don't see large cuts there. But in back office usually the buying entity prevails, see fleet, MBNA, etc. Investment will be shrunk which is mostly NY. We will be hit, i know BOA IT has been.
Well, I think that the issue here is that BOA's job cuts are on top of what we (as a city) will suffer with the Wachovia/Wells merger.
Too many bankers out of work at one time will seriously create some problems as far as obtaining new jobs is concerned. Too many people vying for the same jobs...makes for a very tough situation.
I'm sorry, I am one of those that is very concerned about this announcement. It may keep Charlotte from maintaining their position as the second largest financial center.

I know what you mean. It is very very difficult to recover from being out of a job for a while, especially once it stretches over six months. And then, often the new job does not pay as much when you try to replace it and stay in the same area. Been there, done that. The loss of income plus having to borrow money off 401Ks, deplete one's savings . . . we had a big setback after a job layoff . . . Like you, I feel awful when anyone goes thru/ downsizing, layoff, company failures . . .
Regardless of the unemployment rate in a region - or the % of employees who will get laid off at BofA . . . when it is YOU . . . your unemployment rate is 100% at that moment - and it sux.
