Most likely Uptown.
In that case, in your price range there are several areas you could find great condos that would not have many if any children around (though no place is a completely "child free" zone). I do recommend you look at condo's in the Dilworth area, or try Southend (which is next door to Dilworth), many new loft style condos being built. I know you said "home" and not condo, but for the kind of lifestyle you are talking about I think you might really like a condo in the uptown area more than you might realize.
For a home with fewer to no children around I like a little subdivision called Bishops Ridge off of Providence Road. These are large homes on basically tiny lots, no yards to keep up, no yards for kids to play in, hence, not many kids Here is an MLS #'s of two there for sale right now, check it out to see if this appeals to you. 651909 or 653511

Charleston Place and Belle Vista in Ballantyne Village are nice condo/townhome complexes mostly adults. If you'd like to see pix you may use my website (under my profile) and look in Area 5. If you'd like mls sheets send me a note and I'll e-mail them to you.
There is a neighborhood in South Charlotte- off Rea Rd (the north side of Rea- heading towards Colony Rd) that doesn't have children in it- called Amherst Green (at least thats what I've heard). Its geared more towards older people who don't have children. I'm not sure if its only older people or if it has a mixture of people who are old/young.

There are areas for young professionals with no children in Blakeney, Ballantyne, South Park, and the Queens Road areas. It might be best to go online and find something you like then check out the area. There is a set of maps on http://www.charmeck (broken link), under "Neighborhoods", select "2006 Quality of Life Study". The maps are color coded and denote demographics like number of residents under certain age. That will help you decide what type of area you'd be in.
