Snow is less dense than water (same with ice). Pure rain is the best for of precip in terms of stomping out drought.

The average calculation is 1 inch of rain equals 10 inches of snow.

As of right now, next Thursday and Friday (57% chance) are being forecast with snow showers. (see attached image)

If you believe in superstition, next Friday night would be the same night (January 16) that we had our good snow last year (the one that stuck for a day or two).

I realize the forecasts in Miami were much more simple: Hot with rain every day. But why are the forecasts here so far off? For the past few weeks, Weather.com has forecast snow in their 10 day forecast. A day or 2 later, the 10 day is totally different. Is it the mtns nearby that cause the big swings in the forecast?

Yes, it is the mountains. If we get snow, it comes up from the south, never from the west or north where the mountains "block" it.
