We are a professional couple looking at moving to the area. We love walkability, coffee shops & book stores, as well as stuff for the kids. We tend to be a more Urban family, though we would like a house with a yard larger than a postage stamp. Ideas?

It's a big metro, where would you be working? That would have a bearing on where to look.

Dilworth, Eastover, Cotswold or the town of Davidson
I heartily second Davidson as a viable option.
You could also look at Birkdale Village, plenty of walkability
but not the largest lots....however Birkdale is across Sam Furr Rd.
and could offer the larger lot, with a little longer walk.

I agree with the masses here...
Dilworth (which is in the city of Charlotte a stones throw from uptown)
OR
The town of Davidson, which is 20-30 minutes north of Charlotte
Both have what you are looking for and are very, very nice places to live.
