Does anyone know what this plant is? Saw it recently in Charleston (was going to post in SC boards, but they seem deserted compared to here!) and LOVED it, would love it for my garden here if it will grow.

Is the bloom actually on that shrub, or is it growing up through it? Trying to deciper the folliage. It looks like some other bloom with smaller flowers is also coming up through it.

That looks like an Asian lily-type of flower, coming up through some shrub. Hard to tell, but that's my best guess. google "asian lily" and see if you can find that one.

The bloom was definitely part of the shrub, that's what I thought was so gorgeoous about it! I'll be flipping through my (actually my parent's) Southern Home Garden book some more, but I'm not finding it so far, was hoping someone here would know right off what it was....something to do while DH and my DDs are watching Star Wars

I found a fantastic website and got the Vine id'd in mere hours. here's the response I got:

"Your lovely flowers are Gloriosa lilies Joanchris2000 also known as Tiger's claw. They are the national flower of Zimbabwe. "

The website is:
Home and Gardening Forums & Blogs - Garden Stew
and there is a forum just for Plant Id

Looks like they are not hardy here (hardy in zones 8-9) but I could still get them to plant and dig up the tubers to overwinter in some peat moss.

Joan - that is a wonderful website. I am bookmarking it. I could spent hours on it!!! So glad you identified the lilies. I love lilies and am very curious about how this type would do here.

Really glad you shared this with us!

I did get a couple more responses to clarify, as someone here said, it does appear that the whole bush is not the lilies, that they climbed up through the shrub.
They will not overwinter here unless dug up (tubers) and stored indoors, or planted in a container that can be moved indoors over the winter.
