I just did my study on Friday and have a appointment to get the cpap next week. They gave me an F- on my study. Basically telling me I should not be able to function. I am nervous about how I will be able to sleep with that machine. They said during the study when I had the mask on that everything was perfect and that the preasure was at 12. It would be nice not to be banished from the bedroom. If I knew this would happen I would have spent more $$ on the guest room matress. It is nice to hear that people get used to it. Gives me some hope.
One question if anyone can help. Did your health insurance cover the cost of the cpap? Listening to the lady today it sounded like I was going to fork out 300.00 to 500.00 with insurance. I am going somewhere in Ballantyne.
If this helps a woman I work with is on the machine. I guess she had some of the worst numbers you could have. She said it took her a few weeks to adjust but after that she was fine. The biggest thing was it gave her peace of mind and that was a big factor in her adjusting to it.
I've used a cpap for 15 years and can't sleep without it. My insurance co. pays for a new one every 3 years. A humidifier will greatly help your comfort. Play around with various masks (cpap.com is a good site) until you find one that works for you. They have a great product, cpap hose lifting system for $25, that will keep the hose from dragging on the mask as you sleep. Tighten the mask strap just enough to keep the mask from leaking, but not so it's the least bit uncomfortable. Also look into the Mirage Activa mask, it's very easy to wear. Good luck, and don't quit.
I did two sleep studies in Nov 08 and have been using CPAP since Christmas. At first I hated it and found myself taking it off during the night. But, then I became used to it and have used it nightly since January.
My pressure is (get this) 17. Yep, it's like sleeping with a leaf blower strapped to your face! But, my oxygen rate before CPAP was 53 and I used to toss and turn all night while waking up with horrible headaches.
I may have to switch to BiPAP as the pressure is so strong that I often lose the seal of the mask, especially the way I move when I sleep. I typically have to reset the CPAP 3 - 4 times a night.
But that's still letting me rest much better than I was without it!
I've worn one for about 2 and half years...when I did my sleep test, they said I stopped breating 35 times an hr...my pressure is set at 10...I have a mask that covers the nose, but not the mouth, and the machine I have has a built in reservoir for a humidifier (must use distilled water in it)...anyway, right now, I love it so much, that I can't even fall asleep for a nap w/out wearing it...I tried once or twice to sleep w/out it, and I couldn't...but, it did take a week to 10 days to get used to it...like other said, it was figuring out what setting my humidifier needed, and how tight the mask needed to be on...
