Default Please help recommend nice family oriented town

My husband has been asking me for a year now to move from NJ to the Charlotte area. I've been reading things about the schools being overcrowded and it seems like it's becoming "built up" down there with so many people moving there. Is there an area that has great schools, smaller class sizes, friendly neighbors? I don't like developments. Maybe just an old fashioned town with a main street. Also, a town that doesn't mind people moving in from out of state. Someone I work with moved to NC and had to move back because the kids in school were so mean to their children for being from the north. I thought that was really sad. Any nice towns?
