I'm looking for some information about fences here in Charlotte. We are planning on getting a new wood privacy fence (simple, nothing fancy).
- Do you need a building permit to build a new fence (we do not have an HOA to consider just wondering about city permits)?
- Does anyone know about how much it is per foot? Just approximate so I can get a ballpark...
- Does anyone have a great fence company they would recommend?

Thanks to this great forum for the great info!

You can go to your local home depot with your measurements and they will tell you exactly what you need and how much all the materials will cost. They just plug the dimensions into a program and it spits out all the details.

This will at least let you know how much you should expect to pay for materials and give you a basic idea on what a fair quote would be. Fences are not too difficult to install, especially if there are pre-fabs available that meet your taste. I ended up doing the work myself so I saved a lot but most of the estimates were in the $10-13 ft range, but mine was only 4 feet tall (hoa restriction).

Even if you don't have a HOA it's worth checking the restrictive covenants of the subdivision.If other people have privacy fences than that may also be indicative of any restrictions.

I don't believe you need a building permit, because the fence is not attached to the house.

Suburban Fence $2900 + $300 teardown/haul away of old fence
Premier Fence $3900 + $320 teardown/haul away of old fence
No Building Permit required (my HOA is not an issue)

Cheaper does not always equal quality. It pays to get 3 estimates and be sure the company has insurance in case something goes wrong.

Of coarse and just because you go for the middle quote doesn't mean your getting quality either. The same goes for the highest quote. There is always a risk of someone doing a poor job at any price point.

With any company, I would watch them like a hawk. Making sure things are done right and everything looks good. That's why you never pay in full upfront. OP, get some references from these companies.

I wasn't saying go for the middle quote but rather you when you have 2 quotes close together in price it may make you think twice about the quote that is way off either way (high or low).

OP, I checked BBB for those two businesses.

Suburban Fence;

3 complaints in 36 months;
2 for failure to respond to complaints
1 for failure to honor warranty svc..

Premier Fence and Deck;

16 complaints in 36 months;

6 are resolved
10 are administratively closed

Take these with a grain of salt. If Premier does a lot more business than Suburban, than they are more exposed to complaints.
