I was a prisoner of TWC (under current regime) since 1994 or so - come on over to U-Verse...it is incredibly awesome and my upload speeds are 2-3x TWC, not to mention whole house DVR and clearer SD & HD feeds on all my sets.

I have to do more research before I switch. I like the simplicity (and overall low cost) w/the "package" w/phone and internet...not sure if I can get a clean transition if I use satellite....

can we get some examples if its easy to bundle other than TWC?

Here is what I recommend.... Cancel cable and never look back!

Instead do this:
  • Get cable internet (if you don't have it already)
  • Get netflix account for $16 a month
  • Buy a Roku - $100 one time purchase, with no fees
  • USe Hulu and other online TV network sites (ABC, CBS, FOX)
There is a TON of stuff to watch. It also means that I don't idle in front of the TV when there isn't anything on.

I did this several years ago and never looked back, I save $100 a month and used the money saved to buy a 50" plasma that has a VGA input so I can hook my extra laptop.

I keep the laptop on my coffee table and watch online tv shows through my laptop or through the Roku. Then I have DVDs coming in the mail all the time.

If I don't have time to watch the DVD I copy it to my laptop with a program called DVD decrypter (free) and play it on the TV later with VLC media player (free)

And, the other problem with your solution, Ryan, is that I rarely watch movies. I have my favourite TV shows...and nick at nite, TV land...it is not conducive to this. I regret that, because I looked into it....

also, for the Dish people, just look online to the myriad of consumer complaints against them...that stopped me cold.

Wish they would make these companies break up or, at least, require that they have an ala carte option. I could save a bundle because I only watch a few channels... (which happen to be on the more expensive schedules, of course!)

up against the proverbial rock....

Many people still do (especially if you don't trust using your cell w/911 calls or if you have an alarm system.)

We have a land line, but possibly might get rid of it in the future....

What then if you don't have a laptop?

I believe there are alarm options now that work on the cell phone system or via an internet connection.

UVerse's biggest hindrance right now is their availability. It seems there are FAR more people without access to it than there are those with. Such is the problem with a fiber line. One weak link and the whole network is a vein effort for the end user.

Like I said, I just got back from FL...spent a week at a house with Dish Network. It just seems like a cheaper network (cheaper quality). The menu is cumbersome to navigate, the channels are split up all over the place. Just didn't feel like a good setup. Maybe I'm being too picky...

To me, TWC is still a good option (despite this latest price jack) due to their no contract commitment and "promise" of no rate hike for 12 months even without a contract.
