I just returned from Chattanooga and saw some nice homes in my price range. I am only looking to pay 90-120K. It is just me and I am retiring there and paying cash. I did get some info from a nice realtor, but I spent much of today reading the crime statistics for Chattanooga and become concerned. She recommended Red Bank, East Brainerd and North Chattanooga. I have been reading your posts and I wondered what you think. I am 61 and from San Diego, CA. I am very much a live and let live person. I currently work at Home Depot and I am very active. Please respond at your convenience and tell me what you think.

Thanks in advance!

Carol

Crime will be everywhere of course but I think if you are in the city you will be exposed to more crime rather than if you were in the outskirts or surrounding smaller towns. The smaller the area the less people, = the less crime. And you do know who your neighbors are. Don't rule out Soddy Daisy either for a nice smaller town. Besides, your dollar will go much further. Also, don't rule out buying directly from an owner and elminate the R E commission. All you have to do is go to a bank and get a realestate attorney to do the paperwork which is free or low cost. We did it and glad of it. Good luck and best wishes.

Smile Welcome

WELCOME Ms Carol on your 1st post. I believe there are some new condos / townhouses on the North shore hill in that price range. It is a buyers market in this economy.

. Yes the south side of the city has quite a bit of negative news last six months. Mini gang issues, but there is also lots of brand new construction.

The E. Brainerd part of town reminds me more of the good parts of La Mesa if you lived in the Mount Helix area and had to go down to Grossmont Center to shop. We live in the E Brainerd hills and we feel like were on vacation in Tahoe but still only five minutes from one of the biggest malls in TN. Its the humidity and insects that we are trying to get used to. Milk is more here but gas is cheaper than in San Diego. So I tell my wife "more driving, less cereal"
