Hello,

I have some acreage outside Kingsport, nearer to Gray and have the same rose type weed that is abundant in my woods.

It is a real nuisance. It is almost every where, and grows into a low large bush that streams runners to spread it's size.

Tough vine like underground roots carry it's budding new shoots along it's way to spreading it out. It does not flower to my knowledge ( 2 1/2 years of ownership of this property). I have never seen flowers.

I would also like to know what it is and how to get rid of it without expensive environmentally unfriendly chemicals.
We have a shipper/shredder to grind them up. But am leery of spreading them around as mulch.
Besides, they are very stubborn and hard to yank out of the ground. Very strong and thorny!

Suggestions?

Thank you,
Keith

bybyc5: That's a variety of wild rose. If it's growing in the shade, that may explain the lack of bloom. If it DID bloom, it would have lots of small white fragrant single flowers - very pretty, but it blooms only once a year and as you know, is very invasive and can spread through both the roots and the fruits. The rootstock of this rose has been used in the past for grafting garden roses, as it's so very hardy.

Check with your county extension agent about getting rid of this pesky rose. Good luck!
