I want to move to the hill country... Chattanooga seems a perfect fit. I noticed that St. Elmo / Avondale has homes for a price that I could pay cash for. Is this too good to be true? Is St. Elmo a safe place to live? I am an older lady - empty nester...
Is there another area of Chattanooga where I should be looking?

St Elmo is still a little sketchy, but slowly getting better. There have been a string of robberies lately. I wouldn't recommend living there alone. I also don't really recommend Avondale.

I agree with the rest of these posts. St. Elmo is not a desireable location...to bad since it;s at the base of Lookout Mountain which is gorgeous! What are you looking for? WHat's your criteria? It would to know to make further recommendations!

Default Afraid of St. Elmo....

I have lived here for over 20 years, two of my close neighbors are widows living alone and we haven't had any problems. There have been some break-ins but they seem to have abated.
As far as the Valley goes...my daughter lived there and the first night in her house a group of armed men ambushed a man and shot him in her drive-way. (a meth related crime)
Meth is happening everywhere and you are not more "safe" place than another.
St. Elmo has rough areas and nice areas...I would just do a lot of asking and looking.
My take on it.

My wife and I are also considering a home in St. Elmo's around 44th and St. Elmo. We want to live somewhere near downtown, with a park and cafe in walking distance, and neighborhood with character. Oh, and we have dogs and need a yard and streets to walk them on. St. Elmo seems perfect in many respects. Its even got a trail up to the top of Lookout mountain.

But, of course, we also want to be safe. We have a child on the way, and some of the reports on this site about crime in the area are scary.

Right now we rent in North Chat and love it, but it's too expensive for us to buy. And we probably would need to send our child to a private or magnet school if we live in St. Elmo. The house we are looking at is big and beautiful with a huge lot asking around 280k but includes rental income from a separate building.

P.S. any suggestions for alternatives if St. Elmo is a bad idea. I work downtown and want to be within a ten minute commute
Anyone have any opinions on this?
