Not a fan of the new Camaro in any trim and I'm generally a GM guy. Solely on performance among all of them, it's hands down the new Mustang. Even a regular GT is a heck of a performance bargain.

The new Camaro (2015?) is supposed to switch to the new Alpha RWD platform and is expected to lose around 200-300 pounds. That will make a huge difference in the overall performance of the Camaro. Hopefully they also lighten up on the styling a bit and compromise in the direction of drivability and ergonomics. Even if the Camaro matched the Mustangs performance today, I still think it would be the worse car to drive owing to the driving position and lack of visibility.

At least the Camaro has IRS. But you can't really blame Ford for using a fence post for a rear axle; they're just listening to their customers.

I have mixed feelings on the IRS in the Camaro. The Ford solid axle performs VERY well and doesn't really hinder the car and as you said is what people wanted. The Camaro's IRS execution is good, much better than the one in the GTO, but any advantage in the corners is erased by the Camaro's weight. Basically, the Zeta platform is great...for a Pontiac G8...not so great for a "pony" car. Hopefully Alpha which will also be shared with the new Cadillac ATS will show what they can really do. An even better IRS on a platform that shaved off a lot of weight, should make the Camaro the better handler, even if it gives up a couple tenths to the Mustang at the drag strip.

IRS is better than live axle for those not so smooth European or American roads. On smooth race tracks the IRS offers absolutely no advantage.

When it comes to drag racing IRS is a big disadvantage because it has so many more parts that can break.

When it comes to rear or mid engine, IRS is the only way to go.

Those SVT IRS Mustangs have no edge over the live axle
Mustangs on the track.

Don't forget the 9" Ford is to rears what the SB Chevy is to engines.

How do I figure what? It's pretty simple IRS handles bumps better than a live axle but on a smooth track or road, what does IRS do for you?

Looks you get CTS-V hardware for less money. Should be interesting to see how it performs. Magnetic Ride Control is the truth.
