Anybody else having this problem? I had to replace the driver's side speaker in my '05 Silverado this past winter. Dealer told me it was shorting out. Now this morning, the speaker in my passenger side door is out. I've never had trouble with speakers in any other vehicle I've owned, and I'm certainly not abusing the system. Did Chevy just put in some lousy audio equipment or is something else going on?
never heard of any troubles...and i know lots of silverado owners, i have a 97 silverado and had the stock door speakers for about 6 years before i decided to upgrade...
while the stock speakers are great by any means, unless they are the optional bose system speakers, they aren't "lousy"...
good news is, they are very easy to replace, and upgrading those speakers won't cost you very much...if you're thinking replacing them, check out alpine's 6.5 coax or the components, you can find them both for under $100 i believe...the comps may be a hair over $100, but well worth the money....of course, you can spend alot more if you want, but you can improve the sound for well under $100.
yup like other have said time to upgrade your speakers you can go many ways pretty much all of the aftermarket stuff will be better than the cheap paper speakers that came with it stock
Speakers almost never "short out" as the mechanic said. It bugs me when people say "short" but more than likely the problem is an "open" circuit.
If a speaker actually has a short circuit - it is likely to cause the amplifier to fail.
A speaker will stop to make sound for the following reasons:
1. The flexible leads from the terminals to the voice coil break, causing an open circuit
2. The voice coil fails due to overheating/overpowering; could cause a short if the voice coil insulation fails or an open if the wire melts
3. A mechanical problem with the cone, suspension, or spider
Moisture usually causes #3. Paper cones are especially susceptible to rot or tearing.
Mine have been nasty since the the car wash people
cranked them up
