Hello, I am planning on moving from MI to IL my job is in Barrington, I am looking for lake front property and was wondering what lake everyone would recommend that won't be a hours drive to the city. I am open to taking the train so if there were a town/lake where I could catch the train that would be perfect? Lake needs to be all an all sport and really not into people who do nothing more than strut their social level and income. I am more laid back. I do like the feel of the country but like to be within short distance of the city and all it's activities. Any suggestions welcome! OH, am single and 50 something.

When you say "wont be more than an hour drive to the city" do you mean Chicago, or Barrington. I think you mean Chicago, but I'm not clear, and it could open up the range quite a bit if you mean Barrington

I mean Barrington, would like to stay with a 30 minute commute Please. The trains stops right in front of my office so that is a plus. Thanks for your response.

Probably Crystal Lake, Lake in da ills (ya mon) or Lake Zurich, not sure if that train runs a west route a.m. though...Fox lake is probably cheaper, but I don't think there's a train.
Good luck

Chummy is correct and surprisingly serious. I would add Tower Lakes and there are some water views in Barrington. But none of these lakes have metra service to Barrington. However, the commute from any of these locations is ok plus you have great schools in Barrington and Tower Lakes and good schools in Crystal Lake, LITH and Lake Zurich. Fox River Grove feeds into Cary School District which is struggling financially. As a result, they have eliminated art, music and PE. They have also closed an elementary school and they still are not in the black. Good luck. This is a great part of Chicagoland.

Metra also has some train service along the NW route to & from Barrington that goes to McHenry. You could include McCullom Lake in the search and if you don't mind a short 20 minute drive to the train staion Wonder Lake.

Anything in the Barrington, Fox River Grove or Cary areas will put you either on or near the Fox River. These towns all allow for easy access to the METRA train into the city and all provide a variety of housing from single family to townhomes.

Access to expressways will require a little bit of driving though.
