There is a "malls from the past" and present type of website. I stumbled across it once. Maybe others know of it. They mention this mall among other defunct malls in the area.

See if you can google it. I wouldn't think a mall would be left standing very long without being demo'ed. It would be a good place for vandals and junkies to hang out.

I would not recommend visiting if thats on anyones mind. You never know who you might run into, and the structural integrity of the building is compromised. Theres also packs of wild dogs which roam the grounds...(not to mention the police patrol heavily).

If you want to know more about Dixie Square, go to www.labelscar.com
They also have other dead or strong malls in the Chicago area.

Being an avid fan of the movie, I found the story behind the mall scene to be interesting. The mall had been closed and empty before the movie was filmed. The studio came in and "recreated" a shopping mall environment for the filming and they proceeded to wreak havoc as part of the script. After filming, the mall was again left empty and has since fallen in to a serious state of disrepair due to neglect, vandalism, and other acts of less than savory activity.

On a lighter note, here's a video I enjoy of a guy recreating the mall scene from the movie in the "remains" of the Dixie Square Mall...

In answer to the original question - Yes, people have been inside it (myself about 4 times), and no there are no longer anymore signs left (Toys R Us was created strictly for the movie and a hand-painted sign remained inside until a few years ago; there were signs for Thom McAnn, Burt's Shoes and the City Life lounge but they too also disappeared). The place is in really bad shape and has been picked over for "souvenirs" very thoroughly.

EDIT: Just noticed the first post was two years old but was bumped yesterday. I'll leave the pics up for amusement. Enjoy them from the comfort of your home and stay out of the mall. It is indeed full of asbestos and occasional dogs, etc. About half of the second floor of Penney's has collapsed and what remains is very weak and you don't want to be there if anything else collapses.

Why hasn't this place been torn down yet? If anyone ever gets hurt or killed in there-Harvey will get hammered with a huge lawsuit.
