Here is a cab companies rates:

Chicago Carriage Cab Co - Taxi Rates

It is about 12-13 miles(atleast) from Ohare airport to Near north side. You are talking about $40 a trip.

The CTA blue line also runs to O'hare and some hotels may run shuttles to/from ohare(ask first).

To get to O'Hare from Oak Park via the Blue Line you need to travel all the way to the Loop and then back out, horribly slow -- about two hours.

Hostels: http://www.hostels.com/chicago/usa

Makes the most sense for those on a tight budget!

Yeah unless you are going here on buisness and need to make a good impression this is probably a better idea if you can not afford a hotel. The time and money wasted in travel will really add up and yeah Ohare to Oak Park is quite a hual via public transit(However there might be a bus that is a little faster than the train but yeah that is going to be atleast an hour plus trip via public transit).
