I recently received a job offer for a position in Des Plaines by Mt. Prospect/Algonquin Roads in Des Plaines.

I grew up here in the NW Suburbs but have been away from the area for 15+ years.

Not sure where to live to have a decent commute yet vibrant area. I am a 40 year old single woman and while I am long past clubbing days, etc I still enjoy having good restaurants, bars, gym, public transportation, etc preferably in walking distance. I'm a city person living in Manhattan for years.

I posed this question to several friends here - one's husband even works in this area - all of them told me do not move to the suburbs and said i will be bored out of my mind and miserable, even in downtown Arlington Heights, Des Plaines or Mt. Prospect. (These are people who actually live in these areas telling me this. They said Edison Park might be an option.

So any other suggestions?

Thanks.

Edison Park is about as boring as most suburbs. Schaumburg has about as much night life as any Northwest suburb, so it may be an option. Try to stay west of Mt Prospect Road since just east of there is a busy railroad where they run about a hundred freights a day and no road agency ever bothered to put an overpass, except I-90. If you choose to go east anyway, add at least 10 minutes to travel time.

You can definitely get something for your budget pretty much anywhere. For the suburbs, I think Arlington Heights would be the best option for you. You could also look at Jefferson Park in the city too.

Edison Park?? I'd greatly discount any further advice from those friends. Downtown Arlington Heights or "uptown" Park Ridge > Edison Park, any day. Des Plaines and Mount Prospect, pass.

Check out the restaurant and bar offerings on local Chamber of Commerce-type websites and visit on a weekend, I think you'll agree.

The friends recommending Edison Park actually are the ones that live in downtown Arlingtin Heights and Uptown Park Ridge (and Mt. prospect)

I ended up gettting another offer which allows me to work from home and only go to the office when I'm lonely - so thanks. Now I'm free to look in the areas I really want to live.
