I'm looking for some input on Hyde Park schools to help with my decision...
Navigating the Chicago Public School System for my 12 year old looks tough. But what I need to know about is the public middle school in Hyde Park (Canter, I think). What is it like? I can't test my son into Kenworth or Whitney Young until he's been in the public system, so he'd be there for a year or two. I'm leaning toward Oak Park because I wouldn't have to deal with the middle school issue, since I know for sure their middle schools are great. Ideas???

Canter is a good middle school. The teachers I know in Hyde Park sent their kids there.

I'm not familiar with the middle schools in Hyde Park, but you are right in that the middle schools in Oak Park are excellent. Both are wonderful, but I'd choose Brooks over Julian because Brooks seems to offer more afterschool activities. Both ISATs and ethnic mix are about the same. And if you decided to remain into high school, OPRF is still one of the top schools. However, I think Young students test higher across the board. Hope this helps.
