Why aren't there more affordable houses being built? There is way more more people that need those than people who will be buying those places that cost lots of money.... Any time they put taxpayers money towards 'affordable housing' it all gets bought up by those who could more than easily afford it to start with. This is Chicago, the land of clout don't forget. The other issue is that the areas with space for new homebuilding are full of people who don't want affordable housing in their area.

Right, like the biggest problem facing most homeless people is the cost of housing rather than mental illness and/or substance abuse that impairs their ability to provide themselves with permanent housing at any cost.
