My fiancee and I are moving to the Chicago area. My boyfriend has been working at U of Chicago for 2 years and commuting from Milwaukee. We have been looking at apartments but really know nothing about Chicago. I would like to keep it as safe as possible as I am from a small town.
I could use some help on where to start looking, we have looking at Hyde Park, Douglas and Bronzeville but can not really know if they are safe and we are finding they are out of budget. We are on a strict budget of $850.00 or under and I have a small dog. I also need an area that is relatively easy for parking as in the summers I drive a Dodge Diesel truck for my work. We do not necessarily have to be right in Chicago, if the commute for him was 30 minutes of less that would be fine...
Any ideas??? I know I have a tall order!
Thanks!

If you're still remotely interested in Hyde Park, here's some places to look into. They're through MAC Apartments which kind of has the monopoly on commercial renting in Hyde Park. They get mixed reviews, but everyone I know that has rented from them has had a nice experience.

Cornell 55 Rentals in Chicago, IL
Ellis Street Rentals in Chicago, IL
Ellis Court Rentals in Chicago, IL

I can assure you Hyde Park is very safe. I grew up there and I'm in the process of moving back with my three young kids. Very safe, very friendly, and a great place.

The wild card is the pickup truck -- given that LSD prohibits pickups and most Hyde Parkers with vehicles rely heavily on the Drive it is a very uncommon to spot pickups in Hyde Park...

Well I talked to my auto guy and he said my truck would be class b, so I guess then any suggestions for a area out of the city within 30-40 minutes from U of Chicago that is not too far south? Yikes! I want to thank you all for giving me a heads up on this otherwise it could have been a disaster!!
Thanks!

Oh wow, I completely glazed over that part. Yeah, a pick-up truck in Hyde Park is not cake walk.
