2 Irish Girls moving 2 Chicago in June! (Addison, Lincoln: apartment, hotel, neighborhoods)

Hey guys!

So me and my best friend are moving to Chicago in June and we are super excited! We are just finishing up a degree in marketing and would love to hear your opinion on jobs and the chance of getting them!

We also would love to hear some top tips on everything from where to live to where to go for a beer! Really anything is appreciated!

Neither of us have done much travelling so every little insight is welcomed!

Welcome! I act like I live there, but I don't at the moment. My wife and I are moving back later this year but I spent a few stints in Chicago. It's one of my favorite cities in the World! My top 5 are Dubai, Chicago (I'm biased), Vancouver BC, New York, and London. We LOVED living in Chicago! We are in our upper 20s so night life was always important to us too! You really can't go wrong with Wrigleyville (CTA Red Line Addison stop) or Lincoln Park just down the road to the South of Wrigleyville. The cool thing about Chicago though is there are so many small neighborhoods that have their own unique feel. I've spent most of my time in the Andersonville/Edgewater area - some great bars there - Hop Leaf on Clark is one our favorites. But, when we relocate this Summer we will probably move to Tri-Taylor / UIC Med District. That area is quite different but has great Italian and Greek restaurants and it puts you close to the United Center for Hawks and Bulls games! I would say, stay in a hotel for a week or so if you can afford it and really recon the city!!!! Chicago Apartment People (I think apartmentpeople.com) is a great service for out of town folks who really don't know the city. You sit down with an agent and tell them what you want and they drive you around the city!!!

Are you moving here permanently? If not, how long will you be here for?

Sorry to break it to you but you can't just move here and get a job if you don't have American citizenship. There is a visa process, which only takes place once a year (in April), and you have to have a job offer, from a company willing to wait until October for you to start.

True, but I don't think girls are after that, OP specifically asked how jobs in marketing area are.

For that you will need either a)work visa type of thing b)green card.

I think we are safe to assume that these young ladies with their degrees have already gone through immigration stuff already or that they ARE going through the immigration process already. As for the job situation in Chicago: the SAD FACT is that unless you're an illegal / undocumented immigrant of hispanic origins, you won't get a job in Chicago. The next FACT is that unless you're a member of a political family or member of a family that does political contracting to the city, you will not get a job OR housing!

Thanks so much for the amazing replies all really so helpful please keep the info coming!Ok so the great thing about being a grad is that we are entitled to get a grad visa which is in the process of being sorted! So absolutely no worries there! We are hoping to spend one year minimum, I dont know if you have heard but Ireland is not a good place to be right now! If you think your economy is bad well lets just say we are up sh*ts creek! There is not a job to be had! A little disturbing to hear about the whole illegal/ connections job situation hopefully we will be lucky!

Uhm...it's a little bit better here, but I wouldn't hope a job handed to you after you come here.(it's a reality) It took my friends six months to find anything remotely related to their field after graduating.
