Borders - Uptown, North Ave, Clark & Diversey, and Water Tower closed. I was surprised Clark & Diversey and Water Tower closed, I thought those were profitable locations. Too bad, I should have gone to the closeout book sales there too.

Borders was always a good stop after walking get coffee etc. too bad

Barnes and Noble, where are you? One Border's for the entire city? One located in updown Dallas is closed as well. Alot of these Border's closings are in urban or town center areas. To bad...

I always wondered how Borders and Barns and nobles stayed in business. They have huge stores in really nice areas and only a small amount of people buy stuff other then coffee. They really need to have people buy the book then the can read it there.

As far as I know, both those locations had strong revenue, but also had high expenses. Retail space fronting not only Michigan Ave, but the Watertower itself had to be extraordinarily expensive, and they had four floors worth of space there and over 100 feet of street frontage. You can't pay for that space by selling discounted cookbooks and mass media magazines. I would guess that those stores also had higher-than-average theft problems, which cuts further into margins. Rent at Clark/Diversy must be among the highest outside of downtown, so they probably ran into similar high-revenue/high expense issues there, too.

I have to agree with you here, I was really disapointed when I walked into the one on Clark and Diversey a could weeks ago and saw it was all on clearance. I like being able to swing into a book store on weekends and read/work. Going all the way down the loop for a bookstore isn't really practical for me... bummer.
