$5.5 million?

Isn't that the settlement the city proposes to give to the family of Laquan McDonald, the 17 year-old that was shot by Chicago police 16 times? He was armed with a knife.

And $500,000 to the family of Kosch.

"Reparations" is a loaded word in the context of U.S. race relations and probably shouldn't be the one you use for a judgment awarded in a single case.

If it was a white person who was shot would you have titled it "whites get reparations"?

What does this have anything to do with reparations and race? It was a person who was shot by police and the city is settling.

Can you double dip in criminal and civil court?

When people get shot by police, so many times the family files a lawsuit against the city and get millions of dollars, and no criminal charges is pressed against the cop.

Jon Burge cases are different because the people under him were false imprisoned, and were given money while they were alive.

But when people die, why does the family get rewarded money? What if a person was killed by police but had no family. If he lived in an apartment with roommates, can those roommates file suit because they're neighbors?

Like the case with the Northwestern professor that got a student drunk and sexed her. No criminal charges were pressed, only civil. Because he was a professor there, she won lawsuit money from Northwestern. But could you double dip with the criminal court? What about if he were arrested for rape, could she then in addition file lawsuit money?

Like Anthony Abbate, a drunk off-duty copy that beat a woman down, but he happened to be a cop. So she was eligible for millions from the city, even at the time she did not know he was a cop - an argument made by the city. But in that situation, I believe there was a double-dip. He was arrested, and happened to be a cop, so she in addition won money by the city. If he were unemployed, then I guess no lawsuit could be filed.

Months ago, a woman was killed by the Presbyterian church in the South loop when a big chunk of rock fell from the roof and hit her in the head. And some week later, a lawsuit was filed against the organization for money, by the family. Although I suspect the lawsuit isn't against that individual church as it would have no money, but that church may belong to a larger organization of Presbyterian churches that have a bigger bank account.
