KateL, I sure hope (and doubt) that anybody who took time to post to this forum just sits and watches the litter/dog poop etc. For us personally, we have posted the Pets Waste = Disease signs. We sprang (with our money) for the baggies and tied the dispenser to a couple of trees. During the summer we have organized (with the help of the city and CAPS) neighborhood clean-ups where 50 - 100 resident volunteers march through predetermined routes to pick up trash.
Couple of things is that there is a minority that does not care about litter, the throw bottles out of cars thinking that it is somebody else's responsibility to pick up, they look at us weird when we pick up trash on our block every other day. That is the frustrating part. Battling the ignorant mentality. Also, during thaws, the dirt, grime becomes even more apparent

Do you live downtown or in the Far Northwest side or Far Southwest side? They are really the only areas that can possibly be like you state your area is.

No I live in a nice downtown neighborhood by navy pier. The people who have dogs around here just seem to care enough to pick it up. It isn't a problem, fortunately. Sorry for trying to offer suggestions...

Actually, if you live by Navy Pier, you have the benefit of machines that come along and sweep up the sidewalks at night, and there aren't really any grassy areas. The rest of us aren't so lucky.

oh. I guess that's why I never noticed any poo! I have noticed the big machines though.

In my neighborhood, most of the poo is in the grassy area between the sidewalk and the street. Maybe some people think it's okay to leave it there because no one is likely to step in it if it's away from foot traffic. In areas without that grassy strip, it's harder to rationalize leaving it.

By the way, the award for grossest sign in Chicago goes to the ones I've seen in Buena Park that say something to the effect of: Dog waste attracts and feeds rats.

How's that for a visual?
