My vehicle registration expired 4/30, but I'm leaving the state permanently by end of May. Can I get by without renewing the registration? Seems there is some law that gives 30-day grace period:

Lawmaker: Give drivers 30-day grace period on buying state vehicle stickers - Chicago Tribune

When I register my vehicle in the new state, will they give me any trouble for having an expired Illinois registration?

You should check with the state you're moving to... fwiw, I did the opposite, I let a plate expire when we moved from Georgia to Illinois and then did a title transfer and plate registration here in Illinois with expired Georgia plates and had no issue.

I'm not sure of any state where it's legal to drive around with expired registration.

I just got an email reminder to renew my vehicle sticker and it says:

Per City Council ordinance, there is no longer a 15-day "grace period" for failure to display a new unexpired Chicago City Vehicle Sticker: vehicles can be ticketed ($200 per ticket) immediately upon expiration of the Vehicle Sticker. Tickets can be issued daily until a new unexpired Vehicle Sticker is displayed.

So looks like I have to renew even though I am leaving Chicago in 3 weeks. Or I just avoid parking on the streets ( right now it is in a garage ).

If you are moving to a new state, and already have an address there, park the car, order a new registration for the new state, and drive when the new registration arrives to your current mailing address.

The ordinance you referenced is for the city sticker. This is not for the state license plate registration sticker.

Are you referring to the city sticker or the license plate sticker in the OP?
